Most people know ICBC covers counselling for the person who was in the accident. What almost nobody knows is that immediate family members may also be covered — even if you were not in the vehicle.
I am Dave Dyck, a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) and registered ICBC provider. I direct bill ICBC and offer virtual sessions across Vancouver Island and BC.
Who Qualifies as a Family Member Under ICBC?
- Spouses and partners of someone injured in an accident
- Parents of a child who was hurt
- Children whose parent was seriously injured or killed
- Siblings in some circumstances
Coverage requires pre-approval from an ICBC Recovery Specialist — but I can help you navigate that process.
What Family Members Actually Go Through
- Secondary trauma — absorbing the fear and shock of what happened to your loved one
- Caregiver burnout — exhaustion from supporting someone through recovery
- Grief — especially if the accident resulted in death, disability, or significant life change
- Relationship strain — accidents change people, and that affects those closest to them
- Anxiety — fear every time your family member gets in a car

Grief Counselling After a Fatal Accident
If you lost someone in a motor vehicle accident in BC, ICBC covers grief counselling for immediate family members. This is one of the least-known benefits in the ICBC system — and one of the most important.
How It Works
- The person who was in the accident has an open ICBC claim
- You reach out to me with your situation
- I help you request pre-approval from an ICBC Recovery Specialist
- Once approved, I bill ICBC directly
- We start sessions focused on what you are experiencing
