Being in a car accident changes things. Even if you walked away without a visible injury, something shifted โ€” and you may not have the words for it yet. You might feel anxious behind the wheel, disconnected from the people you love, or like you're constantly waiting for something bad to happen again.

That's not weakness. That's what trauma does to a nervous system.

I'm Dave Dyck, a Canadian Certified Counsellor (MC, CCC) based in Nanaimo. As a registered ICBC provider, I offer ICBC-funded counselling with direct billing โ€” meaning in most cases there's no upfront cost to you.

What ICBC Covers After a Motor Vehicle Accident

Under ICBC's Enhanced Care program, you're entitled to mental health support after an accident โ€” regardless of fault.

What Brings People to ICBC Counselling

The emotional impact of a car accident doesn't always show up right away. Many people feel fine at first โ€” then notice things starting to unravel weeks later. You might be experiencing:

My Approach to ICBC Trauma Counselling

Sessions are practical and trauma-informed. We don't just talk about what happened โ€” we work on how your nervous system responded to it and how to help it feel safe again. I draw on CBT, nervous system regulation, and EMI therapy to help you process the accident without having to relive it in detail.

I work with individuals, couples affected by accident stress, and family members whose lives were disrupted by someone else's accident. If trauma or anxiety are part of your picture, we address those directly.

Serving Vancouver Island โ€” Virtually

I offer virtual ICBC counselling to anyone across Vancouver Island and BC. If you're in Duncan, Courtenay, Parksville, Ladysmith, or Campbell River โ€” geography is not a barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's referral for ICBC counselling?
Not if you start within 12 weeks of your accident. You just need your ICBC claim number. Contact me and I'll take it from there.
It's been more than 12 weeks โ€” can I still access support?
Yes. Extended coverage is still possible with the right documentation. Reach out and we'll figure out your options together.
What if I'm not sure if what I'm experiencing is trauma?
That's okay. Many people aren't sure. A free 15-minute consultation is a low-pressure way to talk through what you're noticing and whether counselling makes sense.
Are virtual sessions as effective as in-person?
Yes โ€” research consistently shows virtual counselling is just as effective. It also means no commute, which matters when driving feels difficult.
Can my family members also access ICBC-funded counselling?
They may be eligible. See the ICBC Family Counselling page for details.
